Today I Can, maybe tomorrow You Can too!
The Men’s Shed in Swords is a part of the widely successful Men’s Shed Movement that has swept across in Ireland over the last number of years. The movement encourages the establishment where men of all ages can get together to take care of their mental and physical health while doing activities that they enjoy.
Each week the members of the Swords Men’s Shed welcome Michelle, a Siel Bleu Physical Trainer, to their Shed. She coaches them through one hour of physical activity and the results have been inspiring.
A number of years ago, Frank, 59, a former truck driver, was shocked with a surprise diagnosis of leukemia. While he never considered himself to be very active, after spending considerable time in hospital, Frank felt the muscles in his legs has deteriorated. Frank has since beaten leukemia and finds the exercise classes have helped him to make the tasks of daily life easier. “I can drive easier now, it’s much easier to turn my head around and to get in and out of a car.”
Nicky, 69 has always considered himself to be quite fit all his life, and is still playing regular badminton games. However the exercise class has helped him to trigger new muscles, which weren’t used too much in his regular physical activities. Nicky states says “I can move much easier now!”
Ronnie retired 18 months ago and found it difficult to fill up his time with worthwhile activities. He found meaning in the Swords Men’s Shed, and particularly in the weekly exercise class. Michelle’s workouts have helped him to move a lot easier than he did before. Ronnie says “I can tie my shoelaces now without the worry of having to bend down and be able to get back up with ease.”
